As long as processed condiments are unopened, they are safe until the expiration date on the packaging. However, once the packaging is opened, how long can the food be kept? Below is a list of some condiments' shelf life after opening:
1. Tomato sauce. Unopened: 1 year. After opening, keep in the cupboard for 1 month, and longer in the refrigerator.
2. Mayonnaise. Unopened: 2-3 months. After opening, keep in the refrigerator for 2 months. Always refrigerate after opening; never leave mayonnaise out of the refrigerator for more than 2 hours.
3. Mustard. Unopened: 2 years. After opening, keep in the refrigerator or cupboard for 6-8 months.
4. Vegetable oil (including chili oil, Sichuan pepper oil, etc.). Unopened: 6 months. After opening, keep in the refrigerator for 1-3 months. Opened oils should preferably be stored in the refrigerator.
5. Chili sauce. Unopened: 1 year. After opening, keep in the cupboard for 1 month; longer in the refrigerator.
6. Sour cream. Unopened, keep in the refrigerator for 2 weeks. After opening, keep in the refrigerator for 2 weeks.
7. Salad dressing. Unopened, keep in the refrigerator for 10-12 months. After opening, keep in the refrigerator for 3 months.
8. Jam. Unopened, keep in the refrigerator for 1 year. After opening, keep in the refrigerator for 1 year.
9. Peanut butter. Unopened, keep in the refrigerator for 6-9 months. After opening, keep in the refrigerator for 2-3 months; longer.
